One or Two People Killed And A Dozen Injured In Florida Shooting
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 2:32 PM
One person has died after a gunman opened fire earlier today in an Orlando office building that housed an engineering company. In addition to the single death, five others were injured. The shooter was laid off from the engineering firm two years ago, though specifics about his motive are still unknown.

This office shooting comes less than 24 hours after the horrific attack on Ft. Hood.

From ABC:
ORLANDO, FL -- Orlando Police say they have arrested the suspect in the downtown Orlando shooting that left one dead and five injured.

Jason Rodriguez was arrested at his mother's residence without incident.

People streamed out of the 16-story Legion Place office building around lunchtime and some told local television stations they had barricaded themselves inside their offices.

A House Call to Capitol Hill
Posted by: John Campbell at 9:32 AM

Factoid of the Day: The Pelosi government run health care plan creates a new 2.5% tax on all medical devices not sold through a retail establishment. That means a new 2.5% tax on everything from wheelchairs and hospital gowns, to artificial organs. And that lowers health care costs how?

Tea Party: Yesterday on Capitol Hill, we Republicans held a press conference on the west front of the Capitol to oppose the Pelosi Health Plan.  The “Tea Party” people seized on this as an opportunity to express the grass roots opposition to what the Wall Street Journal has called the worst bill since World War II. They started sending their e-mails just a few days ago.

And boy did they deliver.   I would estimate that there were 25,000 people in the crowd all chanting “kill the bill; kill the bill.” There are those on the left who would dismiss this movement as a bunch of kooks and fringe players. They do so at their peril.  I talked to corporate CEOs, Doctors, an investment banker with an MBA, and many other educated people of accomplishment. I would not they say they are angry, but rather, they are filled with resolve. No one paid them to be here, and it should be noted that this event was at 12:00 noon on a Thursday. They just do not want this country to follow the path of collectivism that Pelosi and Obama espouse.  They know it doesn’t work,  and I agree with them.

Another interesting thing to note, is that there is no office for the 'Tea Party.'  In fact, there is no centralization at all. It is completely organic, spontaneous, and organized only through the Internet.  It is just individuals making an individual decision to fight for freedom without any central direction or control, which I might add, is exactly the opposite of how Obama and Pelosi think health care (and many other things) should work.  This movement really is emblematic of the power and dignity of the individual over the power and control of the collective. House Call

And it is that individual choice and right that we are fighting for.  Here is a picture I took of the crowd from my vantage point on the steps of the Capitol.  If you would like to see more photos, log onto my facebook page by clicking here .  The crowd was stretched out over such a wide area that I could not even begin to capture it all without a fish-eye lens, which I don’t have. But hopefully you will get the flavor.

As of this moment, the Democratic leadership still does not have enough votes to pass the bill. Tomorrow, the President will travel to Capitol Hill to meet with Democrats and try to talk enough of them into voting for it. They have scheduled a vote for Saturday, after the President works it some more.

As I write you this from my office in the Longworth Building, I can hear thousands of people outside chanting “kill the bill; kill the bill.” I know that my Democratic colleagues can hear them too.  Let’s hope they listen.

Divided Electorate
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 9:55 AM
Politico is reporting that those massive numbers of independents and undecided moderates who swung for Obama in '08 didn't go for Christie and McDonnell on Tuesday. Rather, two separate groups of voters exist.
  • Ones that got really excited about hopenchange and rallied for Obama in 2008.
  • Ones that got really mad at the recent spat of Democratic proposals, and came out to support R's.
The Obama voters mostly stayed in bed this year, and the Republican voters... well, they're not really sure what happened to those in 2008. But one thing is clear: neither of those two groups had very much crossover.

Gibbs: I'll tell you what a local election is...
Posted by: John Hanlon at 6:00 AM
I just saw this CNN.com story about Robert Gibbs referring to the state elections in New Jersey and Virginia as local elections while putting a lot of emphasis on a Congressional race in upstate New York.

I might not be an expert in geography but shouldn't an election in one out of over 400 Congressional districts be considered more of a local election than a Governor's race?

Joy Behar: Profits Are The "Real Immorality" Of Abortion
Posted by: Greg Hengler at 1:13 PM
Joy reflects the Left's view of real immorality: profit. It all boils down to economics. Marxism is alive and well, just repackaged under a different name. Observe CNN's newest host [H/T: Colleen Raezier]:

Who Voted and How Did Conservatives Split Their Votes: From 1980 (Reagan's first victory) to 2008 (Obama's first--and we hope last--victory)
Posted by: Michael Medved at 3:18 PM
The figures gathered below contain several crucial revelations:

1- Republicans always win big majorities of self-described conservatives--even losing Republicans like Dole and McCain.

2- The ONLY Republicans who win are those who manage to split moderate voters. For instance, Ronald Reagan got 54% of the moderate vote in 1984 and earned a 49 state landslide. Meanwhile, even those Republican nominees who win big among "conservatives" don't necessarily win elections. McCain did better among self-described conservatives in 2008 (78%) than Reagan did in 1980 (73%), but he still lost the election. In fact, McCain beat Obama by 58 points among conservatives, but lost among moderates by 21 points, and so lost the election.

Planned Parenthood Leader Resigns After Watching Ultrasound of Abortion

Big H/T to Breitbart for posting this. This is why liberal Democrats fight the conservative Republican push to show pregnant mothers an ultrasound before aborting their baby.

Pelosi-"Reform" By the Numbers
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 3:39 PM
Its size: 1990 pages.

Its cost: $1.055 trillion dollars -- more than $2.24 million per word of the bill.

Its burden: 13 new taxes on already over-taxed Americans.

Its gift: 1 huge one, for trial lawyers -- requiring states to repeal their tort reforms in order to be eligible for federal money.

And remember -- all of this is to "fix" a health care system under which, in its present form, 90% of Americans are covered, and well over half the remainder could be, if they so chose.

George Pataki Endorses Hoffman
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 11:20 AM
The 53rd governor of New York endorsed the Conservative Party candidate in the NY-23 race at a New York Athletic Club dinner last night. That means an in-state Republican leader has now turned his back on his own state party, and has officially started swinging for what the Republican Party in New York would consider their opposition.

Is the White House backing down from the Fox News battle?
Posted by: John Hanlon at 6:00 AM
It seems like the president's press secretary had a private meeting with an executive at Fox News...

Does this mean that the White House is slowly backing down from their battle with the news network?

Pro-Life Rep: Pelosi "Not Happy With Me"
Posted by: Meredith Jessup at 2:08 PM
Michigan Rep. Bart Stupak says House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is "not happy" about his recent efforts to change abortion-related provisions in the House health care bill.  Stupak is working to ensure taxpayer dollars are in no way financing abortions and tells CSPAN's "Washington Journal" about how some in his party are upset with his attempts to change the bill.

Via The Hill Briefing Room Blog:
"The Speaker is not happy with me," Stupak said.

The Energy and Commerce subcommittee chairman said he has been working with Democratic leaders on a compromise, but they haven't been able to strike a deal. Stupak pointed out that he and Democratic leaders have a fundamental disagreement on whether health plans that receive subsidies from the government should be allowed to provide coverage options on abortions.

Stupak wants a vote on the House floor to strike the language, and predicts he would have the votes to pass such an amendment.

"This has been federal law since 1976," he said, noting that President Barack Obama has vowed not to allow healthcare reform to pay for abortions.

"We have to have a vote," he said.
